Emmett Public Safety Effects Water Rescue - Kalamazoo River
Tue. Jul 27th 2010
The Emmett Township Department of Public Safety was called to a reported water rescue in the area of Beadle Lake Road at the Kalamazoo River.
The Calhoun County 911 Center received a cellular call from a subject whom advised that he was in the Kalamazoo River near Main Street caught in the heavy current and hanging on to a branch. As emergency crews were responding, the subject told 911 operators that he had gone into the water in an attempt to assist a SECOND subject whom had apparently flipped there boat and was ALSO in the water.
Public Safety road patrol units arrived in the area and were able to make contact with the original caller whom was still trapped along the trees caught in the current of the river. Public Safety Fire crews in "water rescue suites" were able to wade down river and locate the first subject whom called 911 clinging to a tree caught in the current.
Once rescued, the subject a 31 year old Emmett Township Resident advised Public Safety Officers that he had recieved a call from his neighbor that his boat had flipped over in the current and he was stuck in the current holding on to a tree limb. The 31 y/o launched his canoe in an attempt to rescue his friend, however he to was caught by the current and swept away. When the 31 y/o saw the trouble he was in, he grabbed a tree and called 911.
Public Safety Officers requested a boat from the Battle Creek Fire Department who responded to assist Emmett DPS. The boat was deployed in the area of South River Road near Beadle Lake in an attempt to locate the missing boater. After some time looking for the subject the boats were pulled due to the dangerous currents and conditions in the river. The boats were in the process of being re-launched in the area of Winding Way near Columbia Ave when a family member of the missing boater advised Public Safety Officers that there father was out of the water and was at a nearby residence.
The man a 50 y.o. Battle Creek man advised that he was out in his canoe because he was curious about the oil spill and got caught up in the current, flipping his boat over. He advised that he clung to a tree branch and was able to use his cell phone to call his neighbor for help. After the call, he was able to get to the embankment and get himself out of the water. He advised that when he saw the fire trucks and police arriving he got scared and hid at a friends house.
Both subjects were treated by LifeCare paramedics at the scene, but refused to be transported. The subjects boat and life vest were also recovered downstream from the incident. No charges will be filed.
