Detective LaVern Brann was shot and killed while he and his partner were investigating a homicide that had occurred the previous month.
The shooting occurred when the two went to an apartment complex to interview a woman and her mother. Detective Brann went to the front of the apartment complex, while his partner went to the back of the building.
While in the rear, Detective Brann's partner heard gun shots fired from the front of the complex. When he ran to investigate, he was met by an armed man. The two exchanged gunfire and the detective was shot in the leg as the suspect fled the scene.
When backup officers arrived, they found Detective Brann shot in the stairwell of the complex. He was transported to Battle Creek Health Systems where he died from his wounds.
The suspect was convicted of Detective Brann's murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole.
Detective Brann had served with the Battle Creek City Police Department for 20 years. He is survived by his wife and two daughters.
Police Officer James Bonneau Jackson Police Department

Police Officer James Bonneau was shot and killed after responding to investigate a domestic disturbance report.
Officer Bonneau and an officer from the Blackman Township Department of Public Safety responded to follow up on a report from earlier in the night of a domestic incident. When they arrived, the suspect opened fire, killing Officer Bonneau and wounding the Blackman Township officer. The suspect was shot and killed by the officers.
Officer Bonneau had served with the Jackson Police Department for two years. He is survived by his fiancee, parents, sister, and brother.
Police Officer Robert (Bobby) Kozminski Grand Rapids Police Department

Officer Bobby Kozminski was shot and killed while responding to a domestic disturbance at a home on Emerald Avenue NE at approximately 1:40 am.
Officer Kozminski responded to a call of a man with a gun threatening to shoot others at the location. Shortly after arriving at the location, he was shot when he went to the rear of the residence to establish a perimeter. Unknown to the officer, the suspect was lying in wait in the garage at the rear of the residence. From that location, the suspect ambushed Officer Kozminski, shooting him in the head with a shotgun round through the glass of the closed garage door. Another officer fired one shot but did not hit the suspect.
Other officers were able to reach Officer Kozminski and carried him to a police cruiser. He was taken to Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital where he died from his wounds.
The suspect was taken into custody and charged with murder. He was subsequently convicted of first degree murder in March 2008 and sentenced to life in prison with no parole.
Officer Kozminski had served with the Grand Rapids Police Department for 7 years. He is survived by a three-year-old daughter, parents, and six siblings.
Police Officer Scot Andrew Beyerstedt Mattawan Police Department

Officer Scot Beyerstedt succumbed to injuries sustained the previous night when his patrol car crashed during a vehicle pursuit at approximately 2100 hours.
He and his training officer were pursuing a vehicle on 24th Street after trying to stop the driver for recklessdriving on I-94. The patrol car left the roadway and struck a tree as it rounded an S-curve.
Both officers were transported to Bronson Methodist Hospital where Officer Beyerstedt died. Officer Beyerstedt was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the accident. The vehicle they were pursuing fled the scene. The driver was arrested on August 8, 2005. He was convicted in Van Buren County on December 14th, 2005, of one count of fleeing and eluding resulting in death. On January 6th, 2006, he was sentenced to five to 25 years in prison.
Officer Beyerstedt had served as a part-time officer for the agency for only 2 weeks, and had previously served with the Cassapolis Police Department four 4 months.
